Muru Mittigar

Building awareness of Aboriginal culture, customs and traditions

Muru Mittigar means ‘pathway to friends’ in the Dharug language, the Traditional Custodians of our area.

We utilise multiple sites to help build awareness of Aboriginal culture, customs and traditions across NSW.

Muru Mittigar Aboriginal Cultural and Education Centre was established within the Penrith Lakes Scheme in December 1998 and was officially opened as a meeting place for sharing cultures in November 1999.

Muru Mittigar seeks to create a better understanding of Aboriginal culture in the wider community; create new jobs; develop workplace skills training and increase sustained employment opportunities for Dharug and other Indigenous Australians. Muru Mittigar has grown and is now established across multiple sites. Our head office is situated in the Penrith CBD alongside our Community Finance Hub. We support our community through our Community Finance Hub by advocating on our client’s behalf with creditors while also providing free financial counselling and no interest loans.

Muru Mittigar also offer bush regeneration and assets protection services for government and private schools and other major corporations. We believe that wherever we conduct business that it is important to work with local Aboriginal communities.

To deliver our vision we win commercial contracts from Government and the private sector which in turn benefits Aboriginal people through providing employment and opportunity. We pro-actively utilise our knowledge of the social procurement movement to achieve our goals.

Muru Mittigar is an Aboriginal controlled, not for profit organisation. It is governed by a Board of Directors and managed by a senior team led by a General Manager. Muru Mittigar functions as a registered company and Public Benevolent Institution (charity).
