Dereke Brown

Dereke is a proud Yuin man on his mother’s side and Dunghutti man on his father’s side, whose art is a reflection of his cultural heritage and personal journey. He began painting in 2012, inspired by the rich traditions of Aboriginal storytelling and the influence of his mother, renowned artist Lorraine Brown. As an emerging artist, Dereke is steadily carving out his own creative path, blending traditional themes with contemporary expression. His work often explores the deep connections between people, Country, and culture, using vibrant colours and symbolic forms to share stories that have been passed down through generations. Painting alongside his partner Allison Day, Dereke finds strength and inspiration in collaboration, and in the powerful legacy of the women who have shaped his artistic voice. Through his art, Dereke continues to grow as a storyteller, using each canvas to honour his roots and contribute to the living culture of Aboriginal Australia.
