Start Collecting Those Statistics as NSW Creative Statement to Parliament Bill Passes
05-03-2025

The NSW State Government looks to expand transparency and accountability within the arts, culture, and creative industries sector following the passage of the Creative Statement to Parliament Bill.

The bill is designed to foster systemic improvements within the sector that drive better outcomes across the creative industries in NSW. The legislation mandates that a Statement to Parliament on the state of the arts, culture, and creative industries be prepared every three years.

The primary aim of this statement is to provide a clear, comprehensive understanding of the size, complexity, and health of these industries, while ensuring ongoing transparency and accountability to both Parliament and the public.

This long-term monitoring and accountability attempts to ensure that the Statement remains a key tool of transparency and communication between the Govenment and creative industry even beyond the 10-year horizon of the current policy.

Of particular interest, the bill specifies the First Nations Cultural Sector within the creative industries framework.

The bill states that the Minister may provide insights into government support for First Nations creative industries as part of the Statement. This includes reporting on direct support provided by the Government, as well as efforts to improve the participation of First Nations people in the sector.

The bill also calls for a summary of key partnerships between the state government and other entities such as the Commonwealth, local councils, and the private sector. This is aimed at giving a fuller picture of how collaborative efforts are contributing to the growth and sustainability of creative industries in the state.

Stakeholders across the Aboriginal arts sector and creative industries are eager to see some long-term benefits of enhanced transparency and government support for a sector that is vital to the cultural and economic fabric of NSW.
